Review of: Bondage and the Bible: DVD Written and Directed by D. Eric Harmon, 2008, $19.95.
D. Eric Harmon, an African-American freethinker, has produced this DVD, which is available at www.bondageandthebible.com. Harmon interviews a wide swath of people to ascertain whether biblical teachings have had a deleterious effect on black Americans. A prime example would be the Bible's sanctioning of slavery. Many respondents acknowledge this problem; some rationalize it by claiming the Bible should be read with the "spiritual mind". The portrayal of a white Jesus in black churches was asserted across the board to contribute to black low self-esteem.
Other issues are discussed in this video; for example, the promotion of greed among prominent black televangelists, homophobia, and sexual exploitation of women. Non-Christians are given credit for playing key roles in the black liberation struggle.
